The other day I asked Michael Lerner (aka Telekinesis) if he’d mind me covering one of his songs. Turns out he’s cool with it and I got on with the learning / practicing / trying not to totally destroy the song.

Yesterday, I locked myself in my room / studio space thing and went thru 3 different versions of the song. There was an entirely acoustic version, a version with some disgustingly squelchy / distorted drums and this version, which initially was a cross between the two…until I chucked 65 million guitar tracks over it.

I’m pretty happy with the outcome. I hope you like it 🙂

Here’s a new song I’ve been playing around with while I’ve been making this album. It’s the first of a few songs that I’ll be putting out to piece together an EP that I’ll put up for free download as soon as it’s finished. The EP will include a few alternative versions of songs, songs that I won’t be putting on the album and probably a few other things.

I’m not 100% sure what’s gonna go on it yet but, it’s just gonna be something for a bit of fun and to keep giving you more music.

Only Human

I hope you enjoy it!

Tell Wolves Tales made a video for their song ‘South of Somewhere’, which I recorded with them in my studio. This is the silly video that they put it to. It’s good fun and reminds me of those terrible videos Reuben used to make (they might not have been that bad, but P-Rock’s quality was definitely poor).

I just had a weekend full of busy-ness. Hiloxam was in the studio on Saturday and Sunday, first with his little brothers band. They were tracking four songs for a new EP. You can hear this on their Bandcamp if you click thru on the image below.

Then on Sunday we were tracking vocals for a couple of songs with Common Knowledge and Passion that he’d been working on. You can hear a clip of one of the songs below!

I also finished mixing for the Tell Wolves Tales new EP. Sounding rad!

Party time next week! I’m off to the BSM 5-a-side to play on the Delta/Alaska team, then back to Dorking to see a bunch of friends play at the Lincoln Arms…AND THEN I GO ON HOLIDAY!

Alright!

I’ve been rubbish at updating this lately cuz I’ve been mega rammed doing a bunch of real stuff, like playing shows and recording…

Anyway, I’ve just been in the studio with Tell Wolves Tales this weekend and together we made some sweet, sweet music. They recorded 3 tracks in even less time than they normally take and we drank a bunch of different alcoholic beverages through out Saturday and ate lots of crappy food both Saturday and Yesterday. All guitars were recorded with a different rig for each song. The most surprising rig was my modded Fender Mustang thru my Fender Deluxe Reverb amp with a cheeky pedal (that I’ve recently had returned to me) creating one of the most awesome tones I have ever heard 🙂 I can’t wait for you to hear all of their new songs. For the first time ever we didn’t use a Telecaster!

Otherwise, there have been sessions with Alfie J Crook, a few others and I’ve been working on my album, which is taking ages… but is sounding absolutely awesome. I’ll write a proper post about the album when I have a chance / more details on track listings etc and I’ll try and get a new teaser track up (or something) online for you all to hear asap.

Yeah! Get psyched!

So this weekend has been a great weekend. Not only did I get to work on recording one of my new songs, but I also got to play a great show in my home town with loads of great musicians (PJ Bond, Alfie J Crook, Tristan O’Hana & Phil Clift) and record Alfie J Crook again, but Alf’s track for PV Undercover track came out yesterday (Sunday).

It’s a cover of Cher’s ‘Believe’! Go and listen NOW!

I then found out this morning that one of the first bands I ever recorded, Serf Combat, have just got themselves a Bandcamp to host all their old recordings and make them available for anyone to download. I recorded ‘The Buckley Era’ and ‘Hands Cast With Music’. You should definitely go and listen to them too. It was really weird going back and listening to stuff I recorded a few years ago, but the songs are great and that made it possible for me to enjoy them as much as I did back then, regardless of recording quality.

As always, thank you for reading!

I hope to catch you soon.

So, I don’t think I’ve ever really seen a review of anything I recorded before where my production is mentioned (however briefly). I guess this is a first. Stoked.

Sorry

I’ve been a bit out of the blogosphere for a while because I’ve been really busy with Christmas, a few shows, writing a whole load of new stuff and recording as much of it as possible, some demos and some that’s gonna make the record. I’ve dropped a lot of songs and half written songs whilst writing for this record so I’ve recorded lots of demos that sound great, but will never work as songs for myself. Perhaps they’ll work for something else. Then I blew the tweeters in both my monitors so was out of action and pretty much did nothing. It’s a new year now though and I’ve already started getting on with stuff. First off, I bought some new monitors. They’re Adam A5xs and they’re great! My old monitors were pretty cack and when they finally died, after 3 years of me battering them, I decided it was time to make that upgrade (in quality, not speaker size) and buy some Adams, seeing as I have wanted some for ages.

Unfortunately due to it being the Christmas period and me constantly spending money on instruments etc I didn’t have enough money hanging around for the Adam A7xs, hence I got the A5xs. Nevertheless, they’re great and have already proved to me that where I thought my monitors were misleading me, they really were. Due to lack of stock where I bought the monitors, I currently have one brand spanking new one, and one of the display ones. For those who don’t know, speakers always have a ‘breaking in period’. This is basically where the speakers need to be used for [insert amount of time depending on speaker] in order for optimum performance. Because of this, the display speaker is significantly ‘fuller’/’richer’ sounding, causing it to be/seem ‘louder’ than the new one. I have a second new monitor on order, however, if I was to work using the current monitors for days at a time, when the display one is swapped for a new one, I’d end up with, yet again, unbalanced monitors. Full on PITA.

Anyway, enough rambling about the details, I am stoked to have some freaking rad speakers in the studio again/finally. They’re also smaller than my last set so are easier to take to other places for location recordings. 🙂

Tomorrow, I’m recording Alfie J Crook… again. We’ve had a few sessions together so far. The first being after a boozy evening recording until 3am. I don’t think there was ever any intention of using those recordings for release, but it was good to get some time in. Since then, we’ve had a few ‘practices’ for a show we were both playing, in Plymouth with Franz Nicolay (which was awesome fun by the way, Hi Franz!). Alf’s set was going to be played as a band type thing. In the end we decided against the ‘band’ show and realised as we got to the venue it was for the best that we had decided this. Some of these practices were recorded. They were purely demonstration recordings for myself (guitar) and Alex (bass).

Next weekend I have a couple of shows lined up. They’re in Horsham and Guildford on Friday 13th (ahhhhh!) and Saturday 14th, respectively. If you can come to either of those it’d be greatly appreciated and I think some partying is gonna go down afterwards on Friday in Horsham.

Finally, I hope you all had an absolutely brilliant Christmas and a very happy new year. I wish you all the best and hope to see / meet you soon.

Studio Upgrades…

live room, luke godwin, mixing, recording, studio, tell wolves tales, We The Drowned

During August I was really busy in the studio with We The Drowned and Tell Wolves Tales. Both bands recorded 8 tracks in my little studio in pretty similar ways. However, the difference between the way the bands themselves worked was pretty cool. It’s not a surprise to hear that some bands go in and blitz their recordings and it still sounds pretty awesome, whereas other bands like to take a bit of time over their work. I’ve always been a pretty slow worker when it comes to my own music, although, I decided to try and do the opposite when I recorded the Springtime Radio EP.

All in all, it’s been a pretty awesome month. Working super long days on the weekend after a week at my office job and playing shows in the week definitely takes it’s toll on your body. There are a few little things I need to fix in regards to the mixes and then it’s up to the bands what they want to do with the recordings. I’ll let you know, when I know.

Anyway, the reason I’m writing is because after 2 years of weekend sessions in my studio, sweating in a 7’x 7’control room with 3/4/5/upto 7(so far) other guys in there, I’m gonna move the control part of the studio into the live room and be there with the band when they record. Obviously this causes issues with monitoring while they play, but I never really made a big deal of that anyway. There’s never been a door between the live and control rooms before, so why now?!

Of course I may find that this turns out to be an absolute nightmare / make the live room too small / sound awful / feel awkward / straight up suck! If that’s the case, I’ll jsut change back. I’m hoping however, that this will give me enough space to feel productive again, interact with the band better if they’re recording live / the drummer when he’s tracking and give me enough to space to expand and experiment with gear which I don’t do at the moment cuz the control room is so small it feels cluttered as soon as I stand in it, let alone as soon as anything / anyone else is brought into it!

Tonight is the night I give this new plan a go. Hopefully, the change will give me a new perspective on the songs that I’ve got to do final mix things to and help me in the future. Tomorrow, I might just have to go and do some serious studio shopping…

Until next time, catch you soon 🙂

PS. Session photos will be posted soon, once I’ve found a moment to get them off my camera / collect the best from other people who took photos.
