Kent Kitchen Session

broadstairs, kent kitchen, luke godwin, rancid, some sort of threat

Yesterday, I drove the lovely two hour drive from my house to Broadstairs in Kent to do a little live session for ‘Kent Kitchen’. Little did I know how much I’d dislike driving for hours when I was exhausted…

The session was great, all the people there were super welcoming and made my first ever ‘interview’ super easy, although I completely chatted loads of shit and am now paranoid I’ll have upset people with the explaination of the meaning / background of the song I played for them. It’s all exaggerated for effect in the song and I just continue that in the explanation. Meh, what can you do!?!

Anyway, after having been a bit poorly for a few weeks my voice was finally back and I didn’t play too bad. I’ll be sure to post the video on here once it’s online and I hope you like it 🙂

Until then, check out this gem of song that Rory (Some Sort of Threat) just found and linked me to…WHAT A HERO!

Until next time…

YES!

I can’t wait! Hanging with some friends and playing music. Never fails.

I’m back in the studio with Tell Wolves Tales this Saturday. Should be good fun. Gonna record two new tracks and finalise mixes, etc, blah blah blah.

Sorry I’ve been so slack on updating this blog, I’ve been hanging around on facebook a lot lately and made a lot of posts on there of photos etc. I’ll compile them all and a few more and hopefully give y’all a massive geek post on here soon. I’ll try and get some examples of recent work on here too. You’ll like it. Everyone I’ve been working with lately has been brilliant and we’ve had some great times.

I still have a few weekend days in November free if you want recording, so drop me an email at luke-godwin@hotmail.com and we can sort something out.

Catch y’all soon and if you’re near Harrow, I better see you at the show!

As always, muchos smoochos

Today I bought a matched pair of sE4400a’s. So far, after a very very quick test, they seem great. Like a far more usable 2200a for instruments more than vocals. That being said, I haven’t recorded vocals through one/them yet. Looking forward to playing with some different micing techniques for different things.

I quickly recorded drums with just one to see what they can do… My favourite position was pointing at the floor tom from beside the snare, between the snare and the kick drum using the figure of 8 pattern. It gave me a nicely focused kick and snare, not too much ride and hats (I don’t have a crash or rack tom on my kit at the moment) but it also gave me a fairly nice amount of the room too. I’ll definitely use a kick mic if I use this position in the future and the other 4400a ,in figure of 8, as an overhead from over my right shoulder. Obviously, this isn’t ideal for every session, but I can imagine it’s gonna be sweet for some stuff.

It also sounded pretty cool on the bottom of the snare, but I didn’t try it with anything else when I tested that so it could suck in a mix!

Awesome. I also got a new headphone amp. Now, I’m going to bed cuz I’ve got work tomorrow and have man flu.

Studio Upgrades…

live room, luke godwin, mixing, recording, studio, tell wolves tales, We The Drowned

During August I was really busy in the studio with We The Drowned and Tell Wolves Tales. Both bands recorded 8 tracks in my little studio in pretty similar ways. However, the difference between the way the bands themselves worked was pretty cool. It’s not a surprise to hear that some bands go in and blitz their recordings and it still sounds pretty awesome, whereas other bands like to take a bit of time over their work. I’ve always been a pretty slow worker when it comes to my own music, although, I decided to try and do the opposite when I recorded the Springtime Radio EP.

All in all, it’s been a pretty awesome month. Working super long days on the weekend after a week at my office job and playing shows in the week definitely takes it’s toll on your body. There are a few little things I need to fix in regards to the mixes and then it’s up to the bands what they want to do with the recordings. I’ll let you know, when I know.

Anyway, the reason I’m writing is because after 2 years of weekend sessions in my studio, sweating in a 7’x 7’control room with 3/4/5/upto 7(so far) other guys in there, I’m gonna move the control part of the studio into the live room and be there with the band when they record. Obviously this causes issues with monitoring while they play, but I never really made a big deal of that anyway. There’s never been a door between the live and control rooms before, so why now?!

Of course I may find that this turns out to be an absolute nightmare / make the live room too small / sound awful / feel awkward / straight up suck! If that’s the case, I’ll jsut change back. I’m hoping however, that this will give me enough space to feel productive again, interact with the band better if they’re recording live / the drummer when he’s tracking and give me enough to space to expand and experiment with gear which I don’t do at the moment cuz the control room is so small it feels cluttered as soon as I stand in it, let alone as soon as anything / anyone else is brought into it!

Tonight is the night I give this new plan a go. Hopefully, the change will give me a new perspective on the songs that I’ve got to do final mix things to and help me in the future. Tomorrow, I might just have to go and do some serious studio shopping…

Until next time, catch you soon 🙂

PS. Session photos will be posted soon, once I’ve found a moment to get them off my camera / collect the best from other people who took photos.
